Wrexham FC, a National League side, has seen its profile soar in recent years thanks to the involvement of two well-known Hollywood actors, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Under their leadership, the club has set its sights on reaching great heights in the world of football.
Presently, Wrexham is topping the National League table with a three-point lead over Notts County, and a promotion would be a major milestone for the club since Reynolds’ involvement. However, the actor has bigger plans in mind, with the ultimate goal of reaching the top flight.
In an interview with ESPN, Reynolds emphasized his commitment to the club and stated, “We want to walk the walk, even as a fifth-tier club. Our ultimate goal is to reach the Premier League, which might seem crazy to some, but if it’s possible to rise from the fifth tier to the top flight, why wouldn’t we give it our all? This is a long-term project and we’re in it for the ride.”
Wrexham Football Club ended the previous term in second place but unfortunately, their journey to promotion through the play-offs was cut short after a defeat to Grimsby. While it is not uncommon for teams to climb up the football ranks, reaching the Premier League from non-league football is rare in modern times. Salford City, backed by investment from the legendary Class of 92, have been trying to make their way up the football pyramid, but have remained stuck in League Two since their promotion a few years ago.
On the other hand, Wrexham has the support of owners who have been able to provide financial stability to the club, enabling them to build a strong team, including the club’s record signing, Ollie Palmer, who joined from AFC Wimbledon. The passion and dedication of football fans can often be a source of emotional turmoil, as expressed by Reynolds through his social media presence. He has been honest about the impact that following football has had on his life.
“Two years ago, I had no real interest in sports. In fact, I sometimes saw it as a hindrance to my life. But now, I view it as the most incredible introduction I’ve ever experienced in sports. It’s truly wild how it has taken over so much of my thoughts and actions. However, I know that without passion, nothing great can be achieved” he added
Wrexham, a low-ranked team, recently made a huge upset by defeating Coventry in the third round of the FA Cup. Their victory has earned them a match against Sheffield United, a team from the second tier, on Sunday at the Racecourse Ground.
